It's difficult combining traveling and teaching, which might be two things you really like. Unless you have supernatural powers to be in two different places at the same time, then fulfilling these two desires will be a challenge. Then again, you can always work overseas as a teacher.
However, traveling to another country for leisure and teaching overseas are two different things. If you do plan to teach overseas, you will have to make various adjustments to the way you live and think.
If you are used to a modernized and very Western environment and culture, you might get shocked when you reach other countries. Asian, Middle Eastern and African countries have very stark cultural differences to Western countries. In non-English speaking countries, you will have to learn the basics of their language to get around. If you are the adventurous type, then this won't be a problem for you.
Building a teaching career abroad is not as easy as you think. Most recruiters require at least two years of experience for you to qualify. They will also require a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate. You will also need to show them that you have graduated from an undergraduate course.
However, it's not just English you can teach abroad. You can also teach your area of specialization; for example, this might be information technology, history or mathematics. Some recruiters, though, require that you have a master’s degree in that field of study or at least have taken some master’s units.
Your personal qualities will also be evaluated by the recruiter. Most schools overseas look for candidates who are adaptable, an optimist, easy-going, a good team player, flexible and who have a good sense of humor. They need someone who can easily get over culture shock and who thrives in challenging environments.
Before you go get a teaching job overseas, list your objectives. Make sure that you are certain you want to work for a year or more in another country.
In some countries, the pay for a teacher, even if you're a foreigner with solid years of teaching experience, is not that good. However, if you are an adventurer who thinks teaching is mostly about touching lives and shaping minds, then give teaching overseas a try. You will enjoy the experience and learn a lot from it as well.
