American Jobs Overseas

There are a lot of ways to work abroad. There are also probably as many reasons to work abroad as well. Some people will cite boredom and the need for a location change.

For other people, simply moving from New York to California (or even Hawaii) would not suffice. Though you may have a totally different location and climate, you still are within the United States, and the people there will still be Americans. Some people would want to experience working in a different location, a different environment, and a different culture, without sacrificing their status as American citizens.

The most popular employer for overseas jobs is still the American Federal Government. Do you want to work in another country? Then pick a country where the U.S. has a military presence or an embassy––that’s basically any country in the world.

You could also try the Peace Corps, which still remains the most popular choice for college graduates who are unsure of the career path they wish to take. But overseas employment is not monopolized by the American government: for those who wish to explore the foreign culture more closely, there are also private employers who offer this chance.

Just to give an example, we all know that the U.S. is now in a healthy, growing trade relationship with China. With this relationship, we can expect a booming trade in American products, like American soft drinks, chocolates, clothes and movies, just to name a few.

As these soft drink, chocolate, clothes, and movie makers profit the new Chinese market, they will need to open up field offices there in China. For this reason, American companies will usually send an all-American pilot team that will be tasked with setting up the new field office and make sure that it lives up to American quality standards.

When applying for a job at these types of companies, it would be advisable to indicate that you intend to be assigned overseas. Once you begin your work in another country, you’ll realize that the pay is good (you get paid supervisor rates). Also, all your subordinates will be locals, giving you the closest thing to foreign culture that the job allows.
